 Customer experience

# Are we building e-commerce experiences to drive sales or to help customers buy?

By Brunella Piccionello Hoffmann October 22, 2026

Recently, I found myself thinking about those small e-commerce features that we, as customers, really appreciate when shopping online.

Being able to zoom in on product images to see the details. Getting a notification when something we want is back in stock. Having different payment options, earning loyalty points, or knowing we can easily return a product if it doesnt meet our expectations. These are features were all familiar with and often take for granted.

But theres something interesting behind each one: they address a customer need, not just a business goal.

🟢 When we zoom in on a product image, were trying to reduce uncertainty about what were buying.

🟢 When we check the return policy, were thinking about the risk of making the wrong choice.

🟢 When we explore payment options, we want to find one that fits our needs. And when we sign up for a back-in-stock alert, were showing interest in a product we cant buy right now.

🟢 This is one of my favorite features, and as a regular [**adidas**](https://www.linkedin.com/company/adidas/) customer, I really appreciate it. Because maybe the color of a shoes sole doesnt matter much to an adult, but try explaining to a four-year-old that the Iron Man shoes he wants arent available in size 28.

From a business perspective, these features can help increase conversion rates, recover potential sales, and encourage customer loyalty. From a customer perspective, they offer something much simpler: the information, confidence, and tools needed to make a purchase decision.

This makes me think that maybe we shouldnt measure the progress of an e-commerce experience only by the new features we introduce, but also by how effectively we identify and address customer pain points.

Because adding a new feature doesnt automatically improve the customer experience. Its real value depends on whether it solves a genuine problem, is easy to use, and is available at the right moment in the customer journey.

At the end of the day, helping customers buy is also a way to drive sales.

How often do we stop and ask ourselves what customers really need before deciding which new feature to build?
