Off-Grid ABM: How to Win Accounts Whose Buying Committee Isn't on LinkedIn

Most ABM programs are LinkedIn programs with an account list attached. Matched audiences, Sales Navigator saved searches, connection requests, document ads served to the target list. That works when the people who decide live on the platform.

In many of the industries I've worked in, they don't. In energy, oil and gas, data centers, hospitality ownership, commercial real estate and tax-heavy finance functions, the people who approve the spend often have a profile they haven't touched in years, or no profile at all. The plant director, the asset manager, the tax director, the procurement lead, the outside counsel. They're real, they hold vetoes, and your ABM program can't see them.

This is how to run account-based marketing when the buying committee is off the grid.

The committee is bigger than any one platform

Forrester's State of Business Buying 2026 puts the typical B2B purchase at 13 internal stakeholders plus nine external influencers, with procurement acting as a decision-maker in 53% of buying cycles, engaged from the start (Forrester). That's 22 people, and some are external by definition: consultants, analysts, auditors, brokers, peers at other companies.

The external layer is not marginal. In 6sense's 2025 study, 76% of buyers brought in outside help such as analysts, consultants, investors or resellers, up from 71% a year earlier (6sense). Its 2024 edition found that teams using outside advisors run longer cycles (13.6 vs 6.5 months) with larger groups (12.9 vs 6.4 people), and TrustRadius found 79% of purchases require CFO approval (Corporate Visions summary of both).

Meanwhile, LinkedIn's reach is narrower than its member count suggests. In Pew Research Center's 2024 survey, the most recent to measure LinkedIn, 32% of US adults said they use LinkedIn at all, and use skews heavily toward college graduates (Pew). That covers the marketing director and the IT lead. It covers the operational, financial and legal roles that hold vetoes far less reliably. Having a profile is not the same as paying attention there.

Most of the decision also happens where you can't target. The latest 6sense Buyer Experience Report (November 2025) found buyers are about 61% of the way through their journey before first contact with a seller, and 94% have already ranked their shortlist by then (6sense). Gartner research published in May 2026 adds that buyers draw on an average of seven information sources in a purchase (Gartner). Consensus gets built in internal meetings, on calls with advisors and in documents forwarded between colleagues.

Even LinkedIn's own research points at the gap. The 2025 Edelman–LinkedIn B2B Thought Leadership Impact Report focused on "hidden buyers," the decision-makers sellers rarely reach, and found that more than 40% of B2B deals stall because of internal misalignment within buying groups (Marketing-Interactive).

Map the committee by information channel, not by title

A standard ABM account plan lists titles: CFO, VP Operations, Head of Procurement. That tells you who matters. It doesn't tell you how to reach them. Off-grid ABM needs a second dimension: where each person actually forms the opinions that shape the decision, and whom they trust.

Committee role

Where they form opinions

Who they trust

How you get there

CFO / tax director

Audit and advisory relationships, finance roundtables, sector briefings

Auditors, outside tax advisors, peer CFOs

Briefings co-authored with advisors, finance-specific benchmarks, peer references

Operations, plant or facility leads

Trade shows, OEM and integrator partners, site visits

Engineers, integrators, peers running similar sites

Partner co-marketing, technical sessions at industry events, site-level case studies

Procurement

Supplier registers, prequalification portals, RFP processes

Their own policies and supplier records

A complete procurement pack before anyone asks: security, insurance, references, compliance

Legal and compliance

Regulators' guidance, outside counsel

Outside counsel

Content that answers their risk questions in their language

Owners and asset managers (hospitality, real estate)

Owners' associations, brokers, management companies

Brokers, management companies, investment committees

Access through the intermediaries who already advise them

External influencers

Their own practice and research

Their own reputation

Analyst and advisor relations run as a planned motion, not a press release

The table is the account plan. Every row without a credible "how you get there" is a blind spot where a deal can stall.

Five plays for off-grid committees

1. Market to the advisors of the decision-makers. If the CFO trusts the audit partner and the asset manager trusts the broker, those intermediaries are your ABM targets. Analyst relations, advisor briefings and co-authored research are account-based marketing aimed one step upstream. Forrester's 2026 conclusion points the same way: providers need claims that can be validated through trusted external voices.

2. Be in the rooms where the committee meets. Trade associations, sector conferences and owners' forums are where off-grid buyers spend time together. The play isn't a booth. It's arriving with a researched list of the accounts attending, a speaking slot or a hosted roundtable, and a reason to follow up that isn't "great to meet you."

3. Use channels that reach buildings, not profiles. Account-based display targets a company's network rather than an individual's social login. Direct mail with real substance, such as a printed benchmark or a short sector brief, still reaches desks that inboxes don't. In Europe, account-level advertising runs into consent rules for cookies and identifiers, so plan it with your privacy setup, not around it.

4. Arm the champion for the meeting you won't attend. If you can't reach the CFO, your champion has to. Gartner found that 74% of B2B buying teams show unhealthy conflict during the decision, and that groups reaching consensus are 2.5 times more likely to report a high-quality deal (Gartner). The same research found content tailored to the buying group improves consensus, while content aimed at one individual's interests can hurt it. Give your champion assets built for the group: a one-page business case the CFO can forward, a risk memo for legal, a procurement pack, an implementation plan operations can believe.

5. Earn coverage in the publications they read. Vertical trade press, association newsletters and sector podcasts reach people who never open LinkedIn. One well-placed contributed piece in the right trade publication often does more for an off-grid committee than a quarter of sponsored posts.

Measure what never clicks

Off-grid ABM breaks click-based attribution by design. If your CRM only records clicks, form fills and opens, it will report an account as cold while the deal moves through rooms you were never in.

The fix is a RevOps job:

What I've seen work

Some of the most valuable deals I've worked on involved committees almost entirely off LinkedIn: a property tax consultancy selling into Fortune 500 energy, oil and gas, and data center operators; hospitality work that closed agreements with global hotel chains; analyst marketing for Fortune 500 unified communications vendors whose buyers trust analysts more than vendors. In each case the decision moved through finance, asset management and outside advisors. None of them answered InMails. What moved the deals was being present where their advisors were, and handing the champion a document their CFO could forward without editing.

In SCALING™ terms, this is the Audience pillar taken seriously: knowing your ICP intellectually is not the same as reaching it operationally. It's also Leverage: advisors, partners and associations extend your reach at a marginal cost no ad budget can match.
